About Dexter
Hello, my name is Dexter! I'm a sweet boy with a bit of a mysterious past. I came to Wags with some healed scars on my belly and legs, and while they're barely noticeable, I do have a few quirks that stem from my experiences. These mostly show up at the vet. I'm not a fan of my nails being trimmed, so I either need to be sedated or walk on concrete to keep them naturally filed. I also dislike having my temperature taken and require a muzzle for that. I do much better when I can stay in the room with my family rather than being taken to "the back."
I have a hearty appetite and will try to eat anything, from tissues to lettuce! It's best to keep me out of the kitchen to avoid tripping over me, as I do love to be right by your feet. When my family is feeling under the weather, I'm their constant companion, staying close to offer comfort and kisses while they rest. I love to use you as a pillow, but I'm also happy to snuggle up next to you or curl up at the end of the recliner.
I'm crate-trained and potty-trained, and I'll let you know when I need to go outside. I'm a medium-energy pup who enjoys playtime and needs to stay active. I love having playmates, whether they're human or canine, to keep me entertained. Without enough stimulation, I tend to find my own trouble! I consider myself a ladies' man and prefer to be the only male dog in the household – too much competition! I've been around cats, but I can be a bit too boisterous for them, and my foster mom often has to remind me to leave them alone. I have a BIG voice and don't really understand the concept of an "inside voice"! I do well with older children who enjoy a good romp, though I sometimes need reminders to "easy" when I get too wound up. If I don't listen, playtime ends, which is a good way to keep me in line. Nylabones and Kong toys are my favorites, and they last a good while, though I do enjoy chewing on them! High-value treats are best given to me in my crate, which is my safe space where I don't want anyone to take things away from me. I walk okay on a leash, but we haven't practiced much since I have a fenced yard. My recall is a bit hit-or-miss, so a fenced yard is essential. I thrive with firm boundaries and need an experienced dog owner who can help me be the best companion I can be.
Ideal Home
Dexter would love an active family with older children. He needs a fenced yard and an experienced dog owner who can provide firm boundaries. He is not a good fit for a home with cats.
Ongoing Health
Dexter has some healed scars on his belly and legs from his past. He may need to be sedated for nail trims and muzzled for temperature checks.
Training & Support
Dexter is crate-trained and potty-trained. He needs consistent training and clear boundaries. He can be stubborn and sometimes too rough when playing, so playtime may need to be interrupted if he gets overexcited. High-value treats should be given in his crate.
