About Odie
Hi, I'm Odie. I'm a 4-year-old, 65-pound black Rottweiler mix looking for a new home where I can feel safe, understood, and supported. My life didn't start out easy. I was found on the side of the road as a tiny puppy with my two siblings. They found homes, and I stayed with the person who loved me most. Because of that rough beginning, I've carried a lot of anxiety and fear into adulthood, but I'm trying hard every day. I'm neutered, house-trained, and on Reconcile to help with my anxiety. Being neutered has helped me, too. I'm nervous with new people at first, but once I trust you, I bond deeply. I'm very gentle with my family's baby, who is five months old, and I've never been anything but sweet around her. I haven't been around other children, so older, dog-savvy kids would be best for me. I've only been around other dogs when I was boarded, and the staff said I did well, but I haven't lived with dogs myself. I'm not good with cats. I'm playful, smart, and I love my toys. I get the zoomies, I know commands like sit, speak, and shake, and I really do want to please. I just need someone who understands how to guide me.
Ideal Home
I'm looking for a home with an experienced dog owner – someone patient, steady, and confident. Someone who understands fear-based behaviors and can set clear boundaries while still being gentle. I'm not a match for a timid handler or a first-time dog owner. I need someone who will help me feel safe, not overwhelmed. I would do best in a household without young children under 14 years of age. I am not good with cats.
Ongoing Health
I'm neutered and am currently on Reconcile to help manage my anxiety.
Training & Support
My anxiety shows up in different ways. I can be protective of my person, especially my mom, and I may bark or growl when strangers come near her. I also struggle with the crate; it scares me, and getting me inside can be tough. When I'm left alone, I do best when I'm given access to just one room. My family even set up a baby monitor so they could talk to me and help me feel safe. Since the baby arrived, I've been more stressed and sometimes get into things like trash or random objects. I'm not trying to be bad; I'm overwhelmed and unsure how to cope. My family has tried so hard, but with a new baby and my anxiety increasing, they know I need someone who can give me more time, structure, and confidence than they can right now. Odie can become overstimulated and redirect to those around him. He has had a single bite incident. His current owner was pulling him away from the screen door as he was barking at the mailman, and Odie turned and bit her hand. Odie would do best going to a home that will provide him with training to teach him that he can relax around strangers and does not need to defend the household.
