Meet Dewey!
If you're looking for a dog who is always ready for an adventure, always ready to play, and always ready to love you with his whole heart, Dewey is your guy! Dewey is a fun-loving, energetic adolescent who approaches life at full speed. He is playful, goofy, social, and absolutely devoted to his people. Whether he's hiking a trail, wrestling with his dog friends, chasing a toy, or zooming around the yard, Dewey lives every day with enthusiasm and excitement. His foster describes him perfectly: "He's the sweetest boy!" And that's the thing about Dewey. Beneath all that energy is a loyal, loving dog who simply wants to be close to his people and be part of the family. Dewey's journey began in Oklahoma when his pregnant mother found her way to a foster family's home. The family took her in, gave her a safe place to stay, and she delivered her puppies there. Because of the kindness of that foster family, Dewey never had to experience life alone. He was born knowing safety, care, and love, and it shows in his friendly and trusting personality. Now he's looking for a family who will continue that journey and help him grow into the amazing adult dog he's destined to become.
Ideal Home
Dewey would thrive in active families, with outdoor enthusiasts, in homes with another playful dog, or with families looking for an adventure buddy. He can play a little rough with cats, so a cat-savvy feline would be important. He likes children but is generally more interested in playing and exploring than interacting with kids.
Ongoing Health
Dewey has what is known as a parrot jaw, which means his upper and lower jaws don't align quite the same way as most dogs. Because of this, he can occasionally have difficulty picking up food from certain bowls or off the floor. It doesn't seem to bother Dewey one bit, and he eats, plays, runs, wrestles, cuddles, and enjoys life just like any other dog.
Training & Support
Dewey is still a young dog and is continuing to learn important life skills. His foster family is helping him work on leash manners, polite greetings, keeping all four paws on the floor, appropriate play behavior, and independence and confidence when alone. Because Dewey loves people so much, he can sometimes struggle with being separated from them. He has shown some tendencies toward separation anxiety and benefits from routine, structure, and continued confidence-building. He can also be a little mouthy during play, which is very common for adolescent dogs and something that improves with consistency and training. The good news is that Dewey is doing very well with crate training and has been successful when provided with a structured routine.
