Diego is a handsome 2-year-old, approximately 60 lb mixed breed boy who has been through a lot but is still eager to find his people! He was surrendered by his previous owner in Alabama and rescued from a high-kill shelter by an affiliate. While he was being treated for heartworm, he was adopted to New York, but unfortunately, that home wasn't the right fit. He's now with a temporary foster who is showering him with love while we search for his perfect forever home. Diego's past suggests he may have experienced neglect, as he was initially fearful of toys and unfamiliar with leash walking. Despite this, he remains affectionate, loyal, and incredibly smart, already knowing basic commands like "sit," "down," "bed," and "go." He is house-trained and great with adults and children.
Ideal Home
Diego would thrive in a home with an active adopter who can provide him with the structure, consistency, and guidance he needs to continue learning and healing. He needs a securely fenced yard, as he has a high prey drive and fence-scaling ability, meaning he is a jumper and security is extremely important. Due to his prey drive, he cannot live with cats. He also gets overstimulated and reactive around other animals due to past experiences, so a home with dogs his size and slow introductions would be ideal.
Ongoing Health
Diego is fully vetted and is currently undergoing heartworm treatment, which is covered by the rescue.
Training & Support
Diego is still learning essential doggy manners, including leash walking, and building trust. While he has made great progress, he will need an adopter who understands that healing takes time and patience. He has a very high prey drive and can be overstimulated by other animals.
