Meet Howard!
Howard is an 8-year-old mixed breed with a DNA cocktail that includes Boxer, Chow Chow, Aussie, Border Collie, Lab, Dalmatian, and more! He's truly one of a kind. While Howard can be a bit stubborn and set in his ways, he's also an incredibly loyal and adventurous companion for the right person. He just wants to experience life by your side, on his terms, of course!
Howard is a dog who prefers a small, predictable world and bonds deeply with his person. He has a lot to say and isn't afraid to express his opinions, often through barking, but it's usually more about him wanting to communicate than true reactivity. Once you get to know him, you'll discover a big goofball whose antics will keep you laughing – especially when he stands on his back legs begging for treats!
Ideal Home
Howard is looking for a home where he can truly shine. This includes:
- An adult-only household.
- He must be the only pet, as he enjoys all the attention for himself.
- A patient and dog-savvy adopter who understands canine behavior and boundaries.
- Someone who will respect his space and advocate for him.
Howard does best with slow, controlled introductions and prefers adopters to avoid immediate head pats, suggesting butt scratches as a more preferred initial greeting. Let him decide when you've earned his trust!
Ongoing Health
Howard is generally healthy, but it's important to note his unique personality.
Training & Support
Howard is a smart dog who loves treats, so consistency is key! He is working on:
- Barrier reactivity (kennel, doors, leash).
- He may bark/lunge at bikes or moving cars.
- "Leave it" and redirection with high-value treats.
- Impulse control, requiring structure and clear boundaries.
- He will bark when impatient, like when being let out of his kennel; adopters should wait him out and reward calm behavior.
Howard thrives with leadership and routine, not chaos or guesswork.
