Optimus Prime is a 5-year-old Coonhound Mix who came to us from the Seminole Tribe. He was humanely trapped because he was too scared to approach people. Life hadn't been kind to him, and trust doesn't come easily. Today, Optimus is living in foster care where he continues to make slow but meaningful progress. He has recently learned his name, is beginning to learn basic commands, and is discovering that good things happen when he chooses to engage with the people around him. Other dogs are his security blanket. Optimus absolutely needs a confident canine companion in his future home and looks to other dogs for guidance, comfort, and reassurance. He has especially benefited from living with Anastasia, one of our other rescue dogs, who has helped him build confidence and feel safer in the world. While he may never be the dog who rushes up to greet strangers, Optimus is starting to enjoy parts of life he once found overwhelming. He loves car rides, watches his foster dog friend closely, and is slowly learning how to just be a dog. Men still seem particularly scary for him, so he may do best in a female-only household or one with very limited male traffic. More than anything, he needs a quiet, predictable home where he can continue building trust at his own pace. The biggest victories with Optimus are the small moments: responding to his name, learning a new cue, choosing to stay close, or relaxing enough to simply exist. For a dog who once trusted no one, those moments mean everything. If you have a calm home, a confident dog, and the patience to let a shy dog blossom, Optimus Prime may be waiting for you.
