About Betsy Ross

Meet Betsy Ross

Betsy's story started on the streets of Manning, SC, where she was found wandering alone and surrendered to Animal Control. When the manager at Second Chance saw her, it was immediately clear something was wrong. Betsy's belly was so large that everyone believed she had to be carrying a litter of puppies.

And the shelter is no place for a mama dog.

So Second Chance reached out to us, and we immediately brought Betsy into Lucky Paws Rescue. We took her to the vet the very same day, prepared for the possibility of puppies — but what we learned broke our hearts.

Betsy was not pregnant.

She was full of worms.

Her belly was so painfully distended that it looked like she was carrying a full litter. In all our years of rescue, we have never seen a belly quite like hers. Thankfully, after treatment, Betsy's body started to recover quickly, and within just a few days her belly was back to normal.

Now comes the part that takes more time: helping her heart and mind recover.

Betsy is a sweet girl, but she is still learning that humans can be kind. Right now, she is living in survival mode. Her response to the world is to fawn — to stay small, stay quiet, and try to keep herself safe. She is not a dog who will immediately run into your arms and trust you on day one. She needs patience. She needs gentleness. She needs time.

What Betsy needs most is a calm foster or forever home where she can decompress, breathe, and learn that she no longer has to survive alone.

She is not “difficult.” She is scared. She is not “shut down.” She is protecting herself. She is not “too much work.” She is a dog who has simply never been given enough safety.

Betsy deserves the chance to become who she was always meant to be — loved, safe, and finally home.

If you have a quiet heart, a patient home, and the ability to let a scared dog come around at her own pace, Betsy may be the girl who needs you most.
