About Moose

MOOSE ALERT! This 3-year-old, big-boned boy embodies the best Saint Bernard characteristics without a lot of the drool! This goofy, funny, and gorgeous dude with the black and white spotted ear is an absolute dream of an XL boy. Worthy XL lovers are going to drool themselves when they see that Moose is on the loose.

Moose was pulled from a Southern Ontario shelter where he spent over a month in an indoor kennel. During that time, he became a staff favorite, always coming to the front of his run with a wagging tail and open grin. He has proven that his A+ behavior assessment from the shelter is the real deal since coming to his Northern Dogs Project foster home. Even though he was intact on arrival, his dog skills were also intact. He greeted his four-legged foster clan with tail wags and some play bows, and when he was told off for being "too much," he simply danced away like a goofy teenage boy.

Twice a day, Moose loads himself into the dog van and heads to a 25-acre playground to run, sniff, and explore nature with his foster fans. He is trustworthy off-leash and spends most of his time following the other dogs as they do dog things. While he isn't going anywhere, Moose is a free-thinking breed who has good recall if you are patient and have a treat or hug to deliver. Only your expectations can dampen the joy of watching this big galoot glow in his happy place. After his run around, this big boy loves to have a deep, oversized nap on one of his memory foam beds.

On leash walks, Moose has proven to be like the moving Walmart greeter. He gives his big body lean freely to adults, both men and women, and he is gentle and curious with children. He has also been polite and curious with dogs he meets, and if there are no squirrels in the vicinity, he will focus his sunshine on those he meets. After being satiated, Moose is the perfect house guest. He is housetrained and mannerly, and can be found snoozing by the AC vent. He does not need or want a crate and can be left on his own in the house without worries.

Ideal Home

Moose will thrive with a guardian who is experienced with extra-large breeds and who wants to get to know a dorky, gorgeous, fun-loving boy.

Ongoing Health

Moose is up to date on vaccinations, neutered, dewormed, and microchipped.

Training & Support

Saint Bernards are not known to be slavishly obedient but rather to work independently in dangerous situations. These dogs have been bred for hundreds of years to save people using their physical strength, intelligence, and ability to problem-solve. While Moose is no mountain man, he is still a 160-pound hunk who can take you where he's decided he wants to go – most likely towards a squirrel. His new person will want to continue to work on Moose's focus on them versus those ultra-interesting tree rats!
