About LILY*

Viejita is a gentle senior gal who was recently diagnosed with diabetes and is vision impaired. Despite the challenging cards she was dealt, she has so much character and is growing more and more confident and capable with every passing day. Her insulin treatment is helping her quickly regain strength and energy, and her mischievous, loving side has really begun to emerge! Despite her loss of vision, she quickly learned the layout of a foster home (and exactly where her food dish was located!) and she loved to follow the pitter-patter of the other dog in the house to help her avoid obstacles and participate in little excursions. With a little time and lots of love, it is clear she will be an incredibly sweet companion. Viejita loves treats, is house-trained as long as she is let outside often enough (being diabetic makes her very thirsty), loves scratches and sniffing around the yard, and is happiest in a calm, patient, and predictable environment as she learns to rely on her nose and ears to navigate the world.

Here’s what one volunteer at the shelter said: “I met Viejita for the first time and she is such a brave girl! Since she couldn’t see me, I spoke to her and held my hand out for her to sniff, and she immediately made her way toward me. She allowed me to leash her up and guide her to a play yard, trusting me to keep her safe. In the play yard, she sat with another volunteer and just soaked up all the gentle affection she could get. This girl should be in a quiet home environment and I hope she can leave the shelter quickly.” Viejita has been working with another volunteer to learn voice cues such as “clear,” “step,” and “door” to navigate her surroundings better. That volunteer has also offered to work with Viejita’s future family to help her settle into her new home. Viejita shares her kennel politely and has been easygoing when meeting other dogs in the shelter. She’s quickly captured the hearts of shelter staff, volunteers, and everyone else she meets, and we can't wait for her to find her forever home!
