Baxter is a senior Chihuahua who was rescued from a large-scale hoarding situation with over a hundred other dogs. He lived in unsanitary conditions, lacked house training, and had no access to proper medical care, food, or water. Due to his past and limited socialization, Baxter is understandably shy and hesitant around new people and in unfamiliar environments. Sudden movements and loud noises can frighten him, and he startles easily. He craves love and connection and has begun to open up in his foster home, even wagging his tail and seeking affection. Baxter enjoys snuggling in bed and rolling over for belly rubs, and while he likes being held, he needs a gentle approach to avoid being startled. He's curious about human activities and will follow his people around the house. Baxter is intelligent and is progressing with house and crate training, though he needs continued patience in these areas, as he is not fond of his crate and vocalizes when left alone in it. He thrives with one-on-one attention and also finds comfort in the company of other dogs, enjoying the companionship of the dogs in his foster home. Baxter would do well with another calm, tolerant dog who doesn't mind being snuggled.
Ideal Home
Baxter would do best in a quiet home without small children. He needs a secure, fenced yard as he has never been on a leash.
Ongoing Health
Baxter has been neutered and had all remaining teeth removed due to severe dental disease. He is heartworm negative and vaccinated. Senior bloodwork has been done, and he has been treated for fleas and ticks. He is currently a little underweight but has a good appetite and should gain weight.
Training & Support
Baxter is progressing with house and crate training but will need continued time and patience. He is not a fan of his crate and will vocalize when left alone in it. He will also need continued patience to help him feel safe and learn to trust humans.
