Gretel is a loving and happy pup once she trusts! She's an extremely smart girl who learns quickly with repetition. Gretel knows "sit," "down," and "wait," and is working on recall. She adores her treats and thrives with frequent, short training sessions using high-value rewards. She's slowly learning to enjoy toys and the company of other dogs, responding with excitement to familiar routines. Gretel has a huge drive to please and overcome her fears, but she needs to progress at her own pace, allowing her to learn positively and build trust. She is very timid and shy, with many fears that require time and patience to overcome. Gretel is gradually becoming more comfortable as part of a family, and while her trust grows daily, meeting new people is still a challenge. She gets along well with other dogs and often looks to them for guidance. Gretel is fully house-trained and will retreat to a quiet spot when feeling nervous or afraid.
Ideal Home
Gretel would thrive in a quieter home environment. Other dogs are welcome and would likely be beneficial for her. She needs a patient adopter willing to let her advance at her own speed, with gentle encouragement when she's ready. Pushing her too quickly can cause her to shut down.
Ongoing Health
Before leaving Cortez Rescue, Gretel will receive a full medical assessment to ensure she remains in optimum health.
Training & Support
Gretel is slowly learning to accept being touched and loves ear scratches and belly rubs. She is now comfortable with a leash and harness and will walk in quiet areas. However, she can be startled by noises, people, and wind, and will look to retreat home. She walks well with other dogs, but quiet surroundings are essential. She is not yet comfortable walking near roads with traffic and noise and will bolt if she becomes afraid.
