Samantha is a truly unique soul, and she wants everyone to know she's "dangerous." Of course, she's not actually dangerous, but she is emotionally dangerous! For example, if you approach her too quickly, she may issue threats. If you move too fast, she may issue more threats. If you attempt to rush the relationship, she may issue her strongest threats. Unfortunately for Samantha, her actions rarely support her arguments. While she would very much like everyone to believe she is tough and intimidating, the truth is that Samantha is a scared little dog trying very hard to figure out how to trust the world. She wants attention. She wants affection. She wants to be close to her people. She just isn't entirely convinced that humans can be trusted with such important responsibilities. When Samantha feels overwhelmed, she may run away. When she feels pressured, she may let you know exactly how she feels about it. But when life becomes too scary and she doesn't know what to do, she often ends up seeking comfort from the very people she was warning away moments before. It is a confusing strategy. We have explained this to her. She remains committed to it. Once Samantha decides you are one of her people, she becomes deeply attached. Beneath all the dramatic warnings is a dog who desperately wants connection and is slowly learning that love does not have to be scary.
Ideal Home
Samantha needs a patient home willing to move at her pace and let trust develop naturally. She needs people who understand that fear and affection can sometimes exist at the same time. The dog issuing threats from across the room today may very well be the same dog climbing into your lap tomorrow.
