Meet Leo! This adorable Frenchie mix was found wandering the streets of San Diego. Sadly, his previous owners surrendered him, stating they no longer wanted him back. They acquired Leo as a puppy, likely from an online breeder, because their children wanted a small dog. Unfortunately, as the novelty wore off and without any training from the adults, Leo spent most of his time alone on the patio. He managed to escape the patio, which led to him being picked up and returned to the original owners. While he was neutered at that point, he was then kept tied up in the backyard, exposed to the elements. When contacted, his owners readily gave him up, likely due to their recent divorce and separate living situations.
Leo has been with us for a few days, and we can already tell he's a healthy, happy boy! He has great breathing, clear skin, and healthy ears, which is quite rare for his breed. He's also been very good with the dogs he's met, showing a playful and energetic demeanor. While he's not officially potty-trained, he hasn't had any accidents indoors and prefers to go in the yard. We recommend a belly band to assist with potty training. Leo is not crate-trained and may have some trauma associated with crates due to his past. We will be working with him slowly to see if he can overcome this, which will be an important factor for potential adopters, especially those who are away from home for extended periods. He enjoys car rides and leash walks and is learning to be comfortable on them. Leo is a bright pup who has been through a lot and will greatly benefit from a patient, dedicated owner who is committed to positive reinforcement training and potentially enrolling him in doggy classes. A retired individual, someone who works from home, or a homeowner might be the best fit for him as he adjusts. He has shown a tendency to chase the cats in the house, likely due to his past experiences of chasing small animals in the yard. Leo is affectionate, a clown, and a handsome pup who deserves a loving and understanding home. With structure, stability, and consistent training, we are confident he will blossom into an amazing companion.
Ideal Home
Leo would thrive in a home with someone who has the patience, time, and dedication for ongoing training. A home environment with a retiree, someone who works from home, or a homeowner would be ideal during his acclimation period.
Ongoing Health
Leo is currently in great health, with no known health issues.
Training & Support
Leo is not currently crate trained and may have some trauma related to crates. He is also not fully potty-trained, though he has had no accidents indoors. He has a tendency to chase moving objects, like cats, and will greatly benefit from professional training and socialization.
