Duster, a charming Shih Tzu mix weighing in at 9 pounds, was found abandoned in a rural field alongside other dogs. He was suffering from sarcoptic mange, a condition that caused intense itching and skin irritation. Thankfully, he's received treatment, including flea and tick medication, and is no longer contagious. Duster also had an umbilical hernia repaired during his neuter, and any baby teeth that hadn't fallen out were removed to ensure his oral health. While his full coat may not have grown back completely due to potential follicle damage, his spirit is certainly shining through. Duster is a friendly but initially shy boy who has embraced human kindness and the comfort of a loving home. He's learning what it means to be a companion pet and enjoys a relaxed lifestyle.
Ideal Home
Duster would do best in a home where someone works from home or is present most of the time. A patient, tolerant, and kind adopter with an understanding of the trauma he has endured is essential. He would likely thrive in a home with a secured backyard for off-leash freedom and less stress from city life. While not kid-tested, he might be fine with visiting children but probably not for full-time living with young kids. He has not been tested with cats but is not expected to have an issue with a dog-friendly feline.
Ongoing Health
Duster is being treated for sarcoptic mange and has received flea and tick medication. Any resident dogs will need to be on a mite-management prevention plan as an extra precaution. Mattie's Place will provide 3 months of prevention treatment for Duster. He also had an umbilical hernia repaired and some baby teeth removed.
Training & Support
Duster is still learning how to be a dog and is tentatively playing with toys. He walks nicely on a leash and will potty outside in a grassy spot. He is still working on potty training and may have occasional accidents indoors, but he does know how to use a pee pad. Duster struggles with being crated alone and experiences some separation anxiety, though he will settle down after initial crying and barking. He is more of a stay-at-home and chill companion with a calm and quiet demeanor.
