Don't let his tiny size fool you — this little dachshund mix puppy is full of love! Pilot is a sweetheart who loves people, cuddles, and following his humans around with his adorable puppy confidence. He may experience the world a little differently as he is deaf, but that doesn't slow him down one bit. He's a playful, smart, and loving puppy who's just as special as any other. He's looking for a patient, kind home ready to help him grow into the amazing dog he's meant to be. Pilot has striking ice blue eyes and a red/tan dapple coat, characteristic of his double merle gene mutation. He's very smart and pays close attention to his surroundings, learning hand signals quickly. He enjoys playing, chewing on toys, fetching (for short periods), digging, going on walks, and snuggling.
Ideal Home
Pilot is looking for a forever home where he can learn to understand and communicate without sound. He's good with most dogs and people, and has been good with cats. However, he is very interested in guinea pigs, so he should not be left unsupervised around them. He benefits from having other dogs to help guide him, as he can't hear cues from his humans.
Ongoing Health
Pilot is deaf due to a double merle gene mutation. He will need regular veterinary check-ups to monitor his vision and other potential issues associated with this condition. His skin and eyes require careful protection from the sun to prevent sunburns, skin cancer, and cataracts. Like all dachshunds, he needs to be kept from jumping off of high places or using excessive stairs to protect his long spine and short legs. More than the average dog, he will need at least annual vet visits to monitor his health. He is currently a healthy and strong boy.
Training & Support
Pilot is learning to respond to hand signals and is getting started with an e-collar to help him pause and check in with his humans. He readily accepts diversions when focused on small animals. He sleeps through the night on the bed and also likes his crate, settling down quickly when needed.
