Frankie

This little spitfire is ready to find her forever home! Frankie is a 2-year-old Yorkie who has a condition called megaesophagus, but she doesn’t let that slow her down. She has a big, spicy personality that commands a room. Frankie is spunky, she is bossy, and she has no idea she is a wee 7 pounds…typical small dog! Frankie came to us at 3 months old when her owners felt they could no longer provide the care she needed with her condition. She was born with megaesophagus (her esophagus is enlarged, making it hard for food to pass easily to her stomach), so she has a special diet and feeding regimen, but is well managed when strictly followed. Frankie is handfed slightly watered-down canned food in a chair and has to sit up for 25 minutes after eating to avoid regurgitation. Total time for her meals, start to finish, is about 40 minutes. During her upright time, she enjoys broth ice cubes because she cannot have water. Her favorite treats are Gerber Puffs, and they don’t cause issues because they dissolve easily. She also requires lifetime meds, 2 prescription and one over the counter, to help with her condition. Additionally, she has to wear a neck donut at all times. If she doesn’t wear this, her saliva gets stuck in her esophagus and causes her to cough and regurgitate. The greatest risk with this condition and regurgitation is aspiration pneumonia, so her upright time is of utmost importance, as well as her not being allowed to eat or drink things she shouldn’t. While megaesophagus can sound like a scary condition, when managed properly, these dogs live very fulfilled lives. Frankie is a very special little lady and we want nothing more than to find her very special family to call her own.

Ideal Home

Frankie is best in a home without children due to her spicy personality and food restrictions. She would do best in a home with dogs her size and would need a laid-back and understanding fur-sibling if she has any.

Ongoing Health

Frankie has megaesophagus, which means her esophagus is enlarged, making it hard for food to pass easily to her stomach. She requires a special diet and feeding regimen, including being handfed slightly watered-down canned food in a chair and sitting up for 25 minutes after eating. She also cannot have regular water and enjoys broth ice cubes. Her favorite treats are Gerber Puffs, as they dissolve easily. Frankie requires lifetime medications, including sildenafil 10 mg and metoclopramide 2.5 mg, both twice a day (estimated cost under $20/month), and one over-the-counter medication. She must wear a neck donut at all times to prevent saliva from getting stuck in her esophagus, which can cause coughing and regurgitation. The greatest risk with her condition is aspiration pneumonia.

Training & Support

Frankie needs her feeding regimen strictly followed to manage her condition. When super excited for extended periods, she can choke on excess saliva, so her exercise needs a little monitoring.
