About Sweet Potato the Melo Family Dog
Sweet Potato firmly believes that personal space is optional. If you're sitting on the couch, she's coming over. If there's a cozy spot next to you, she's claiming it. And if you happen to have a lap available? Even better. This girl is the definition of a cuddle bug wrapped up in a fluffy teddy bear body. She has that rare combination of being incredibly affectionate, wonderfully easygoing, and so naturally comforting to be around that spending time with her feels like a deep exhale after a long day. Sweet Potato isn't interested in causing chaos or being the center of attention. She's interested in being close to her people and soaking up every bit of love she can get.
Sweet Potato is believed to be a GSD/Anatolian Shepherd mix, approximately 6 years old and weighing 57 lbs. She is a rescue dog, and with any rescue, it's always a mystery, and we cannot guarantee breed or age. She's not just a good girl; she's the kind of dog that makes living with a dog feel easy. Fluffy enough to double as a pillow, affectionate enough to believe she belongs in your lap despite not exactly being lap-dog sized (who doesn't love an oversized lap dog?!). She's calm enough to peacefully exist through the chaos of everyday life and sweet enough to melt you on contact. She's not chaotic puppy energy; she's that perfectly balanced, low-energy, go-with-the-flow lady who knows when it's time for a stroll, when it's time to relax outside in the sunshine, and when it's time to curl up beside you on the couch. From what we have seen so far, she has wonderful house manners, will make herself right at home (on your couch, lol), walks easily on a leash, and carries herself like the polite lady she is. No nonsense, no drama, just solid, dependable good girl energy.
One of our favorite things about Sweet Potato is how naturally she gravitated toward the 14-year-old she met. There was no hesitation whatsoever. She immediately walked over, hopped up on the couch, and made herself comfortable leaning all over her for affection. Apparently, Sweet Potato's belief that she's a lap dog doesn't just apply to adults, LOL. Despite her size, she was incredibly gentle, calm, and respectful throughout the interaction. She seemed perfectly content soaking up attention, handing out love, and simply being close to her new friend. Sweet Potato has also been around younger kids ages 5 and 9. Just like with the 14-year-old, she immediately went up to the younger kids and was just as gentle and sweet with them. Based on her interactions that we have seen so far, we believe she has great potential to be a wonderful dog for a family with kids.
Sweet Potato is very dog-friendly and has done great with all of the dogs we have introduced her to. She's much more of a calm, "happy to coexist" kind of gal rather than a super playful dog that's looking for nonstop interaction. She appreciates respectful dogs that are easygoing and not overly pushy with play. If younger puppies or rude dogs get a little too persistent trying to convince her to wrestle or play, she will absolutely give a fair correction like the wise older sister of the group, basically saying, "Alright now kids, go find someone else to bother," LOL. She's very appropriate with her communication and overall has a really grounded, unbothered personality around other dogs. If you don't have another dog, Sweet Potato is completely fine with that too. She does not rely on other dogs for comfort or confidence and seems perfectly happy simply being near her people, claiming a cozy spot nearby, and enjoying the simple things in life.
She has also met our house cat, Biggie, and met him appropriately and was very respectful around him. She did not chase Biggie, nor was she bothered by Biggie jumping or doing what cats do. Biggie also appeared to be comfortable around her as well. We do not know if she has ever lived in a home before with a cat, and this was our first time seeing her with a cat. If you have a cat in the home, we can arrange for Sweet Potato to have a sleepover with a cat upon request. Just let us know!
Sweet Potato isn't looking for an action-packed lifestyle; she's looking for her people. The ones who appreciate slow mornings, peaceful evenings, couch cuddles, and a loyal companion that wants nothing more than to be by your side. She'll greet you with a wagging tail, happily join you for a car ride, settle beside you while you work, and quietly become one of your favorite parts of every day. She's the type of dog that doesn't need to be flashy to stand out; her sweetness speaks for itself. If you've been waiting for an affectionate, easygoing, dog-friendly companion that feels like she's been part of your family all along, this is your sign. Sweet Potato is ready to start her forever chapter; all she needs now is you.
