About Skippy D68885
Meet Skippy! This sweet, middle-aged gentleman from Minnesota is gentle, friendly, and looking for a special home. Skippy has the cutest face with his adorable underbite and darkest eyes. He doesn't let his back leg issues slow him down; he loves short walks and long stroller rides, and he runs around the house with his stuffies and Kongs, loving to play fetch. Skippy is potty trained and will run to the door when he needs to go outside. He sleeps through the night without needing to go out and is fine being home alone as long as his comfy bed and toys are available. He loves curling up next to his people and is happiest when he's close to them. Skippy does really well in the car, gets along with cats and all people, and loves being around them. He might bark for a couple of minutes when left alone, but he settles down. He also barks when his person gets home but stops after being picked up and held for a few minutes. Skippy needs a little extra TLC but doesn't let anything limit his abilities. He takes his medication like a champ and sits calmly when socks are put on his back paws and legs. This little guy is all about love and emits so much joy, ready to be the best lifelong companion.
Ideal Home
Skippy would probably do best in a calm environment where he is the only dog, or with a calm older dog. He is happiest when he's close to his people and loves curling up on the sofa or sleeping stretched out beside you on the bed. Ramps for the bed/couch would be beneficial to prevent him from jumping.
Ongoing Health
Skippy has Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a condition affecting his spine. He will never return to normal spinal function, and he drags his back feet when he walks. To prevent scrapes and wounds, he will do best wearing protective socks on his hind paws. His gait is unique, but proper medication keeps him comfortable, highly motivated, and excited to move around! He must stay on a urinary prescription diet to prevent bladder stones, likely for the rest of his life. Mixing his kibble with canned food or warm water or broth is a great option to ensure he gets enough moisture. The 15/10 Foundation is sponsoring 6 years of reimbursement for his adopters to help cover prescription diet, pain medication, yearly exam, and bloodwork (up to $850/year).
Training & Support
Skippy is potty trained and will signal when he needs to go out. He will dribble if he doesn't get out right away, but this hasn't happened in a while. He is comfortable being home alone with his bed and toys. He might bark for a couple of minutes when left alone but settles down. He also barks when his person gets home but stops after being picked up and held for a few minutes.
