Gingersnap, affectionately known as Ginger or Gingey, is a hilarious, spirited, and utterly charming 9-year-old Pekingese mix weighing in at 9 pounds. She was found as a stray in Houston, and while her past is a mystery, it's clear she's had a tough time and has likely been a mom. A kind shelter employee saw her potential and reached out, prompting us to rush to her rescue. Ginger is a friendly, confident girl with a low to medium energy level. She gets along wonderfully with most dogs, especially smaller, playful companions. In her foster home, she's formed a special bond with one of the resident pups, constantly inviting him to play in the most adorable way. She's also potty trained, crate trained, and a dream in the car and on a leash. Her crate is her sanctuary, a place she retreats to for relaxation. While she had a few accidents initially, she's been reliably potty trained since. She also shows no signs of separation anxiety when left alone. Her exercise needs are minimal, consisting of enjoyable walks and bursts of playful "zoomies" with her doggy friends. Ginger enjoys being handled but can be startled by sudden movements, letting out a small yelp. However, she's becoming more accustomed to her surroundings and the people in her foster home.
Ideal Home
Ginger would thrive in a home with another very playful small dog, as she enjoys both vigorous play and relaxing downtime. Her adopter should be committed to continuing her basic command training for her safety. While she's adaptable and could do well in many home environments, a home without young children is recommended due to her tendency to be startled.
Ongoing Health
Gingersnap is currently undergoing heartworm treatment, and she will be ready to join her forever family in September.
Training & Support
Ginger is potty trained and crate trained. She's working on basic commands, and her adopter should be willing to continue this training. She can be startled, so a patient and understanding approach is key.
