JJ

JJ is an approximately six-year-old poodle mix who was rescued from a city shelter after being found in extremely neglected condition. We believe he lived with little to no care for at least a year or more. Now that he has a fresh start, he is learning that humans can be kind. JJ was caught as a stray in a very matted state. Once cleaned up, we discovered he has some back issues, specifically narrowing of disc space and spondylosis. He is on pain medication to manage his discomfort, but he has snapped or bitten out of pain a few times when being picked up incorrectly. These are warning bites, usually not breaking the skin, to communicate that he is in pain. He needs a dog-savvy owner who understands how to pick him up properly, as he is absolutely not aggressive otherwise. JJ is very sweet, loves to give kisses, and enjoys cuddling and being close to his human. He will likely need lifelong pain medication management. He gets along with other animals and would do best with another very submissive, small dog, and he seems to do better with females. We think he would be fine with cats. Because of his potential to bite out of pain, he would not do well in a home with young children who might accidentally pull on him or hurt him. He loves walks and car rides and is mostly paper-trained. We are looking for a very special person to give him his forever home.

Ideal Home

A home with a dog-savvy owner who understands how to properly pick up JJ to avoid causing him pain. Due to his potential to bite out of pain, a home without young children is recommended. He would do best with another very submissive, small dog and may do well with cats.

Ongoing Health

JJ has narrowing of disc space and spondylosis in his back. He is currently managed with pain medication and will likely require lifelong pain management.

Training & Support

JJ has a history of warning bites when picked up incorrectly due to pain. He needs an owner who understands how to handle him carefully. He is mostly paper-trained and enjoys walks and car rides.
